The Role of Nature in Nurturing Mental Health: Designing Workspaces that Support Employee Well-Being

Understanding Mental Health in the Workplace

Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community (World Health Organization, 2022)

Mental health in an organization refers to the psychological, emotional, and social well-being of employees within the workplace. It encompasses how individuals think, feel, and behave in a work environment, as well as how they handle stress, relate to others, and make decisions. A positive mental health environment promotes healthy work-life balance, open communication, and support for employees’ mental health needs. The organizational dimensions “Active listening” and “Collaborative interpersonal relationships” reached high scores and are also typically promoted among users of mental health services. These dimensions are essential components of effective practice and are actively encouraged among users of these services (National Library of Medicine, 2015).

Several factors can contribute to mental health challenges in the workplace. Poor decision making can play a significant role in the development of mental health problems; and the impact of mental health problems in the workplace can have serious consequences not only for the individual employee, but also for the productivity of the organization (Employee Assistance Professionals Association (U.S.), 2022).

Workload and Stress: High demands, tight deadlines, and unrealistic expectations can lead to work-related stress, burnout, and anxiety.

Lack of Support: A work culture that does not promote mental health awareness or provide resources may hinder employees from seeking help.

Work-Life Balance: Poor work-life balance can contribute to feelings of overwhelm and dissatisfaction, impacting mental wellness.

Isolation: Remote work arrangements can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness, exacerbating mental health issues.

Employers can adopt various strategies to foster a mentally healthy work environment

This can include initiatives such as employee assistance programs, stress management training, wellness programs, and a culture of inclusivity and support. Fostering good mental health in an organization can lead to increased job satisfaction, productivity, and overall employee engagement, while reducing absenteeism and turnover

Awareness and Education: Conduct workshops and training that focus on mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting open conversations about mental challenges.

Support Systems: Establish employee assistance programs (EAPs) that offer confidential counselling services, mental health resources, and referrals to professionals.

Flexible Work Arrangements: Encourage flexible work hours and remote work options to help employees maintain a healthy work-life balance (Verlinden, n.d.)

Stress Management Programs: Implement wellness initiatives, such as mindfulness sessions, yoga classes, and stress management workshops, to help employees manage their stress levels effectively.

Open Communication: Foster a culture of open communication where employees feel comfortable discussing their mental health challenges without fear of judgment or retribution.

Leadership Training: Train managers and supervisors to recognize signs of mental distress in their team members and equip them with the tools to provide support and resources.

In recent years, Sri Lanka has increasingly recognized the importance of mental well-being in the workplace. This shift in focus reflects a broader global trend where organizations are starting to understand the profound impact that mental health can have on productivity, employee satisfaction, and overall organizational effectiveness. (Observer, 2024)
