Flexi working hours, often referred to employee can manipulate or change their working hours to fit their preferences or other responsibilities outside of work. Flexible hours – and flexitime – come in many different shapes and sizes and can help organizations in optimizing their employees’ performance at work.

Employers have introduced flexible working packages (part of work-life policy) in order to attract, recruit, and retain highly qualified staff to their organizations, With the ability to schedule the work himself/herself, employee feels that employer cares about wellbeing and non-working life of employee . That leads to creased satisfaction with the job and employer, resulting in higher work commitment (Yazdanifard, 2014).

The variation of flex schedules

Flexitime: Employees choose starting and ending hours, often with a core period during the workday when all employees are present.

Flexible week: Employees choose a compressed workweek (fewer days, longer hours) or two or more weeks with longer/shorter days (the average not exceeding 37.5 to 40 hours/week, whatever the standard work week is).

Flexplace or telecommuting: Some or all work is done at a location other than the regular worksite, usually the employee’s home or a satellite office. Telecommuting implies that the employee is linked to office via technology.

Flexible reduced-time: Employees work fewer hours than full-time. These options may affect salary, benefits, and career advancement to varying degrees, depending on the arrangement, its length and company policy.

Part-time: Employees choose a reduced work schedule, taking various forms: reduced weekly hours, reduced annual hours, or transactional work (full-time on a specific project with time off between projects).

Job-sharing: Two people share or divide the responsibilities of a full-time job. Informal flexibility: Employees are given flexibility on an ad hoc or occasional basis to vary their schedules, to meet the demands of both the workplace and personal life.             (Goldenhar, 2003)

I agree with the conclusion that flexi-time is beneficial, but there’s more HRM can do, especially in Sri Lanka. For example, companies here could introduce flexi-time for office workers and also consider shift adjustments for factory or shop workers. HRM should educate both managers and employees about trust and responsibility. Overall, I think flexi-time is a great idea, but it needs careful planning to work well everywhere.
